The pace quickens: USA and China put foward substantial climate commitments

US President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday that he will attend the climate talks in Copenhagen in December. The White House pledged a commitment for the USA to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17% by 2020, with further reductions in subsequent years. The day after the US announcement, China declared its intention to reduce GHG emissions by 40-45% from 2005 by 2020.
